Monitor arms for shallow desks: what to measure before buying.

A monitor arm can free a surprising amount of working depth—but only if your desk edge, display weight, and wall clearance all cooperate.

Check the desk before the screen

Measure desk thickness and inspect the rear edge. A clamp needs a flat, unobstructed area; a hollow-core top may need a reinforcement plate. Also measure the distance from desk rear to wall. Some articulated arms need several inches of swing room.

Match the arm to the actual monitor

Find the display’s weight without its stand and verify its VESA mounting pattern. Choose an arm whose stated range comfortably includes that weight; being barely within the limit is not ideal for frequent adjustments.

Place the screen for your eyes, not the photo

Set the top of the screen roughly at or slightly below eye level, then bring it close enough that you do not lean forward. The best feature of an arm is adjustment—use it after installation.

What to look for A clamp compatible with your top, a load rating above your monitor weight, VESA compatibility, and cable channels that do not pinch leads.
