How to choose desk lighting for video calls.

Good call lighting is simple: put a soft source in front of you, avoid a bright window or lamp directly behind you, and give yourself enough light to read comfortably.

Use the window carefully

Daylight is useful when it is in front of you or slightly to one side. If it is behind you, the camera will often expose for the window and leave your face dark. Close a sheer curtain or rotate the desk when the contrast is too strong.

Choose an adjustable task lamp

For desk work, look for a lamp with a movable head and a broad, diffused beam. Position it off to the side to avoid glare on a screen. Dimming is more useful than maximum brightness because evening work needs less light.

Do not over-light the room

A bright ring light may help a camera but can be tiring for long sessions. A small, diffused front light plus a separate desk lamp is usually more flexible.
